90% of Maldives Islands Eroded: Can Ocean Currents Build New Land?

In the Maldives, more than 90% of the islands have suffered severe erosion. The archipelago, home to half a million people, faces the risk of becoming uninhabitable by mid-century due to climate change. Researchers are exploring innovative solutions to combat this issue by harnessing ocean currents to build new land. The Growing Islands project, initiated in 2017, has conducted 10 experiments using various materials and strategies. The latest, the Ramp Ring, deployed in December 2024, consists of six geotextile bladders forming a 90-meter-wide structure in the Enboodhoofinolhu Lagoon. By February, sand had accumulated up to 1.5 meters on these bladders, demonstrating their potential to replenish beaches and create new land. The project, supported by multiple organizations including a $250,000 grant from the US Agency for International Development in 2023, aims to develop a sustainable method to protect the Maldives’ 187 inhabited islands, which attract 2 million tourists annually.

Trying to make beaches. I now track something like an abstract combo of wave action, salinity and wind exposure that keeps nearby terrain barren. It’s a cumulative effect – large bodies of water develop sandy beaches at shores, isolated bays, lakes and rivers overgrow as usual.
