80% of Data Scientists Specialize: Which Path Leads to the Most Employable Skills?

Data science encompasses various roles, with 80% of data scientists specializing in one of four areas: data analysis, traditional machine learning, data engineering, or applied science. Data analysis involves a/b testing, causal inference, and experimental design. Traditional machine learning includes supervised learning, forecasting, and clustering. Data engineering covers ETL, cloud development, model monitoring, and data modeling. Applied science, often requiring a doctoral degree, focuses on deep learning, optimization, Bayesian methods, and recommender systems. The concept of a full-stack data scientist has become less popular, pushing new entrants to choose a specialization for career advancement. With AI rapidly evolving, the choice of specialization impacts employability. Product data scientists suggest learning software development and cloud platforms, while data engineers emphasize the importance of developing a strong product and business sense due to the frequent changes and abstraction in data engineering tools.
