75% of Job Seekers Underestimate the Importance of Statistical Basics!

Statistics reveal that a significant number of job seekers, around 75%, overlook the fundamental importance of statistical basics in their field. A recent case highlighted the struggles of a new employee who, three weeks into a job that involved analyzing graphs and resolving IT issues, realized the job did not align well with their skill set. Seeking better alignment, they interviewed at another company. The first interview went smoothly, but the technical interview was a disaster. The candidate admitted to being confused about basic concepts in statistics, such as linear regression, logistic regression, and xgboost, despite having advanced skills. A senior data scientist advised focusing on these basics, understanding how to derive coefficients and their meanings, and mastering SQL and Python. This experience underscores the critical need to solidify foundational knowledge before advancing to complex models and deployments.

It is always worth remembering that the level of someone’s pay is not an accurate measure to their value to society and importance in the economy.

What’s the point of statistics, anyway? Oh, dear. If you don’t know what it’s for, you also don’t know when it’s not for you https://open.substack.com/pub/decision/p/dont-waste-your-time-on-statistics…

The next time you see a post of rankings or ratings, take it with a grain of salt. Its statistical value lies primarily as a tool for candidates, entities, and policymakers. To my mind, surveys have no real value to voters. #SWSSurvey #DailyTribune Read more at:
