53 Points in One Game: Vanderbilt Freshman Sets SEC Record

Vanderbilt’s Mikayla Blakes, a freshman, scored an astonishing 53 points in a game against Florida, setting a new SEC women’s basketball record. This performance also marks the second-highest point total by a Division I freshman in history, just one point shy of the record set by Elena Delle Donne in 2010. Blakes achieved this feat with 16 field goals and 16 free throws, leading Vanderbilt to a 99-86 victory. Her scoring prowess continued from her previous game where she scored 33 points against Alabama. This season, Blakes is the only Division I player, male or female, to reach the 50-point mark in a single game. Her 53 points also tied the scoring record at the Exactech Arena at O’Connell Center, previously set by LSU’s Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf in 1988-89. Additionally, Blakes broke Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball single-game scoring record, surpassing Khamil Pierre’s 42 points.
