50% of Ship Data Inaccurate: AIS Tracking Challenges Revealed!

In a study using Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, it was found that 50% of the data on southward moving ships is inaccurate due to the system’s tracking mechanism. Each ship emits tracking data every half a second, assigned a unique track ID. The challenge arises when ships pass through a defined polygon twice, capturing both north and south movements. This complicates the calculation of total time and distance traveled southward. Even though the focus is on southward movement, waves can push ships backward, registering a latitude that appears as a northward movement. Simply removing all northward entries would significantly alter the dataset. The study used a polygon defined by specific coordinates to filter the data. Despite these efforts, the accuracy remains a concern, highlighting the need for more refined data filtering methods in AIS data analysis.
