In 2024, the trade of goods between the U.S. and Canada reached $762.1 billion. Over three-quarters of Canadian exports went to the U.S., while nearly half of U.S. imports came from Canada. Starting in March, the U.S. imposed a 10% tariff on Canadian energy and 25% tariffs on other Canadian and Mexican imports. A 25% tariff on vehicles not assembled in the U.S. also took effect, impacting Canada and Mexico. Additionally, a 25% tariff on auto parts is scheduled for next month. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), representing over 100,000 small businesses across 12 of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories, reported that about half of its members are directly involved in U.S. trade. A late March survey showed more than a quarter of CFIB members observed increased demand for Canadian products. Over half of the surveyed businesses viewed the U.S. as an unreliable trading partner.

The tariffs are debilitating to lots of small businesses. They are going to pause investments and are likely going to have to lay off workers to manage tariffs. This will lead to recession in Q2. Below is an account from a Shoe importer.
