50% of 23andMe Customers’ Data Exposed: Company Files for Bankruptcy

23andMe, a DNA analysis company, filed for bankruptcy after a data breach affected half of its customers. Founded in 2006 and going public in 2021, the company has never been profitable. In 2023, a data breach compromised the personal information of nearly seven million customers. Hackers accessed family trees, birth years, and geographic locations using old passwords. The stolen data did not include DNA records. In September, 23andMe settled a lawsuit related to the breach. The California attorney general issued a customer alert advising users on how to delete their data, destroy their samples, and revoke data permissions.
