5 Years On: What Covid-19 Taught Us About Future Pandemics

Five years ago, the world was introduced to Covid-19, a disease that would change public health strategies forever. The CDC’s initial test for the virus failed, undermining public trust. The CDC and WHO had to adapt in real-time, leading to perceived flip-flops in guidance. Despite these challenges, the development of mRNA vaccines was a monumental achievement, with 11 billion doses distributed globally within 15 months. However, public trust in these vaccines has waned, with only 44% of U.S. adults over 65 getting a Covid booster compared to 68% for flu shots. Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) like mask mandates and school closures were effective but have since faced political resistance. The next pandemic might differ significantly, potentially affecting children more, which could alter public response strategies.
