In a surprising turn of events, 2024 marked the first year in two decades where no British music artist appeared in the worldwide top 10 bestselling singles or albums. According to the IFPI’s annual report, American singer Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” was the year’s top-selling song, while Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” led the album charts. Boone’s hit not only topped charts in eight countries but also reached number two on the US Billboard chart. Swift’s album release coincided with her record-breaking Eras tour, fueling fan speculation about the inspirations behind her songs. The highest British entry was Artemas at 15th with “I Like the Way You Kiss Me.” Notably, even in the UK, British artists did not secure any of the top 10 singles, a phenomenon not seen in at least 20 years.
