15 British Series Greenlit but Unfunded: A Funding Crisis in UK Drama

The UK’s scripted television industry is facing its most severe funding crisis, with around 15 British series greenlit but unable to enter production due to financial shortfalls. This crisis stems from a combination of factors including U.S. streamers reducing co-production involvement, declining international sales advances, persistent inflation, falling ad revenues, and BBC funding cuts. Peter Kosminsky, a BAFTA-winning director, warns of an “insidious self-censorship” where creators might avoid pitching provocative, public-interest series due to funding uncertainties. This situation could lead to a decline in the production of impactful dramas like “Mr Bates vs The Post Office” and “Three Girls.” The BBC has acknowledged that multiple shows are in limbo, including A24’s adaptation of “Shuggie Bain.” Kosminsky suggests that without intervention, the UK risks losing its tradition of producing high-quality, thought-provoking television. He proposes a 5% levy on UK subscription revenue from streaming giants to fund British content, a solution already implemented in 17 other countries. However, the UK government has no plans to introduce such a levy, fearing disruption to the screen ecology.
