In a groundbreaking development, a simplified in vitro fertilization (IVF) process has been successfully implemented in South Africa’s first-ever mobile lab. This innovative approach aims to increase access to reproductive healthcare for millions of people worldwide.
Globally, one in six adults experience infertility, making it a significant public health concern. In South Africa alone, fewer than 30 clinics serve a population of over 60 million people, with no facilities available in neighboring countries like Angola and Malawi.
The mobile IVF lab was designed by Dr. Boshoff, featuring a fold-out system that allows patients to undergo treatment at a local facility before using the lab for embryo transfer. The first trial, conducted last year, involved 10 volunteers, of which five became pregnant and two babies were born – Milayah and Rossouw.
What’s more impressive is that Ombelet’s team achieved comparable IVF results using this cheap and easy method in a mobile unit. This breakthrough has the potential to revolutionize reproductive healthcare, making it more accessible and affordable for millions worldwide.

23h Just finished my TESE (testicular sperm extra traction) procedure for IVF. Took 37 years to find out I’m a carrier for cystic fibrosis. Being a carrier of CF can cause infertility in a congenital absence of the vas deferens. So they cut me open without anesthesia and found sperm!
