AI Coding Assistants: Over 25% of Google’s New Code is AI-Generated

The landscape of software development is undergoing a significant transformation with the advent of AI coding assistants. These tools, which include GitHub’s Copilot and general-purpose chatbots like Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini, are now integral to the coding process. Over a quarter of all new code at Google is generated by AI, with human engineers reviewing and accepting the code. This shift is not limited to Google; numerous startups like Zencoder, Merly, Cosine, Tessl, and Poolside are also entering the market, aiming to enhance coding efficiency. These startups are valued highly, with Tessl at $750 million and Poolside at $3 billion before product release. AI coding assistants are evolving from simple autocomplete features to tools capable of prototyping, testing, and debugging code, potentially reducing the need for large teams of human coders. However, the challenge lies in ensuring the functional correctness of AI-generated code, which requires understanding the thought processes behind coding, not just the code itself. Companies are developing synthetic datasets to train AI models on the coding process, aiming to mimic human problem-solving and reasoning. This evolution in AI assistance could redefine the role of software engineers, with some companies already seeing productivity boosts from these tools.
