400 Million Weekly Users: How ChatGPT Impacts Emotional Wellbeing

Over 400 million people use ChatGPT weekly. OpenAI, in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab, conducted two studies to explore the emotional effects of using ChatGPT. They analyzed nearly 40 million interactions and surveyed 4,076 users about their feelings. In a separate four-week trial, almost 1,000 participants interacted with ChatGPT for at least five minutes daily. The studies revealed that only a small subset of users engage emotionally with ChatGPT. Users who bonded with the chatbot reported higher levels of loneliness and emotional dependency. After four weeks, female participants were slightly less likely to socialize than males. Participants using a voice mode gender different from their own experienced significantly higher loneliness and emotional dependency. Some users averaged about half an hour daily with ChatGPT. OpenAI plans to submit these studies to peer-reviewed journals, marking an important step in understanding AI’s emotional impact on users.
