$36.5 Trillion Debt: The Shocking Numbers Behind Government Spending

The U.S. federal government, the world’s largest business, spends over $6 trillion annually. Yet, the focus has often been on cultural debates rather than the financial management of this massive entity. The national debt has ballooned to $36.5 trillion, posing a severe threat to the nation’s future. Recent scrutiny by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the U.S. Treasury has revealed significant issues in government spending oversight. For instance, the Pentagon, with an $824 billion budget, has failed seven consecutive audits, with a goal to pass by 2028. Congress has allocated at least $516 billion for 1,264 programs with expired authorizations in 2024, with some programs not reauthorized since 1980. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has implemented a 15% cap on indirect costs, aiming to save $4 billion annually from the $35 billion research budget, where last year, $9 billion went to overhead expenses. These figures highlight a critical need for transparency and accountability in government spending.
