AI Could Save $200 Billion in Government Waste: Here’s How

Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports reveal that six federal programs account for 85% of improper payments, totaling about $200 billion annually. Medicare and Medicaid top this list, contributing to nearly 14% of the federal deficit. Fraudulent activities, ranging from $233 billion to $521 billion yearly, include off-label drug promotion, upcoding, and unnecessary medical services. AI could potentially revolutionize fraud detection by shifting from the current “pay and chase” method to predictive models that identify suspicious patterns before payments are made. A 2024 study showed machine-learning models could improve fraud detection by eight times over random selection. However, implementing AI in government agencies involves complex challenges, including data sensitivity and the need for a shift in investigative approach from law enforcement to data science.
