36% of Black NFL Players Disappointed by Lack of Diversity in Coaching

In a recent survey by the Associated Press, over 65 Black NFL players from 25 teams expressed their views on the lack of Black head coaches in the league. About 36% of these players felt discouraged or disappointed by the current representation. Despite 53.5% of NFL players being Black in 2023, only 22% of head coaches at the start of the season were Black, a figure that might decrease to 19% next season. Over the past 25 seasons, only 18% of new NFL coaches were Black. The NFL has made efforts to increase diversity through the Rooney Rule, but some players feel it’s not being utilized effectively. The survey also highlighted that nearly 40% of the players aspire to become head coaches, with over 90% encouraged by recent Black head coach hires.
