EigenLayer, a leading Ethereum-based platform, will introduce slashing on April 17. This feature marks the first “feature complete” version of the protocol. Slashing is crucial for EigenLayer’s restaking system, allowing Actively Validated Services (AVSs) to penalize operators who fail to meet set conditions. This development enables a free marketplace where operators can earn rewards and AVSs can launch verifiable services. EigenLayer has attracted over $15 billion to its platform within a year and launched the EIGEN token in October. The ecosystem boasts more than 100 AVSs in development, including EigenDA and ARPA Network. Despite EigenLayer’s pioneering role in restaking, the absence of slashing allowed competitors like Symbiotic to gain market share. Symbiotic, which supports restaking of any asset, has been adopted by early EigenLayer users such as Hyperlane and Ethena.
